Design and Build Project Solutions Case Study: Design

The client required a fourth acid loading bay to increase the existing tanker loading capacity, supplying various acid grades and strengths.

It was to be built alongside three exisitng bays in the space occupied by a non-compatible chemical loading facility, which consequently needed to be relocated.

Since the new facility was to be built in a hazardous area which was in constant daily use by Client personnel, the design required minimum on-site hot work. it was also to be installed during a series of short shutdown windows to minimise disruption on the site.

THE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

On completion of a feasibility study, our process, mechanical and civil engineers worked with piping, structural and civil designers to establish the main process requirements  and optimal plant and drainage layout. A detailed estimate and construction schedule were then prepared for Client approval.

The design phase included preparation of all P&ID's, process schedules and main plant item specifications. We were responsible for specifying and procuring all mechanical plant items, finalising equipment layouts and preparing piping arrangements, break-in details and isometrics.  State of the art laser surveys accurately located tie-in points and existing plant, allowing new pipework to be fully fabricated off-site prior to installation.  Civil and structural works included the drainage design, specification of specialist acid-resistant finishes and coatings, and the design of steelwork support and access platforms.

THE SCALE OF THE PROJECT

The total installed cost of this project was around £750,000, including 300 metres of pipework, 200 metres of which was PTFE lined. Twenty main plant items were specified and procured, including two pneumatically operated articulated loading arms, specialist lined sampling devices, fan and scrubber. 25 tonnes of new steelwork was designed, specified and fabricated at BIS-IS workshops prior to installation.

BIS Industrial Services provided and co-ordinated a full complement of specialist engineering design services, from readily available in-house resources, including process, mechanical, plant design, civil and structural, as well as the necessary project and procurement support. Details from this design group were then issued directly for in-house manufacturing as appropriate.

Our in-house expertise and experience of the latest laser survey equipment and techniques, combined with state of the art CAD, enabled us to provide a reliable, error-free solution, eliminating the need for on-site adjustment and minimising installation time.
