Engineering Services Case Study: Process Engineering

A replacement scrubbing section was required for an existing methyl chloride plant. Since the Client had limited process engineering resource, BIS Industrial Services worked as part of the Client team to review the existing plant and data, and develop a revised process flow sheet, taking into account current operation and improvement. A model of the heat and mass balance of the plant followed, along with hazard studies, chemical engineering calculations to verify equipment performance and, finally, the production of a process engineering specification for the new plant section.

BIS-IS was able to provide a fully flexible process engineering service to fill the gap in the Client's in-house resource. This alleviated the need for (and the cost of) full time contract engineers. We produced computer-based models of the overall plant and specific unit operations , which are useful both in understanding the current operation and in developing the new plant. In addition, we identified issues with the current operation that can be improved in the new plant.

The plant handles 9 tonnes of product per hour, using six columns of up to 1m diameter and 13m tall. With 60 main plant items and 6 process engineering line diagrams , the overall project value is around 8M.
