BIS Industrial Services was contacted to demolish three five-storey buildings on a Chemical Manufacturing site. The buildings were located adjacent to railway line, river and roadway. All the buildings were heavily contaminated with asbestos and various hazardous chemicals. Before demolition could commence, numerous services including steam, air, water, gas, drains, electricity and communications, had to be redirected, and several items of operational plant had to be relocated into an existing building that first had to be totally refurbished and provided with new service supplies.

THE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
BIS-IS was responsible for the management and implementation of this project, from feasibility to completion. Project Management covered strategic, technical, commercial and personnel elements, which were controlled using our Mpower project management software linked with Microsoft Project. This system tracks costs and provides timely reports for internal and Client use.
Pre-relocation
Having developed the strategy and agreed contractual terms and conditions, BIS-IS established an effective Earned Value Management system to ensure accurate project control. We also developed a detailed risk managment system to control the many identified risks, and a comprehensive health and safety system in accordance with CDM regulations.
Post-relocation
THE SCALE OF THE PROJECT
The £1.6M project took 14 months to complete. From design to handover, 10,000 man hours were expended without a single safety incident. Seven sub contract companies were involved, and the service diversions affected 500 metres of cabling and pipework.
This project demonstrates BIS-IS's ability to manage a complete solution for our Client in a complex, hostile environment. Both demolition and relocation were completed within the specified schedule, to the agreed budget and the target of zero safety incidents were achieved.
